The drive is a slave. The motherboard had to be replaced when the PC stopped booting up. The main drive was reformatted, as was this slave. No files have been written to the slave yet; I was using it to store files, not realizing that only an external drive was likely to be immune to a motherboard problem.
I've picked standard files to search for - jpeg, pst, pdf, bmp, doc.
And I found this archived message. What "debug" version is there?

Format Recovery From an External USB drive
Are you using the latest version, 3.56, available from
www.recovermyfiles.com or by clicking the UPDATE button.
If so, please try the same search but this time just search for .bmp and .avi files (turn the other default selected files off). Do you still get the problem? If so, we will need to send you a special debug version which isolates the problem on your PC. You need to send an email to support to get this.
