saving lost files
I just did a full file search on a 250gb maxtor hard drive that has gone down for the second time. I am not sure that it was the same drive both times but I had the first one crash last year and searched it with RMF and got all my files back.
That time I saved all the recovered files I wanted to seperate dvd discs. I do remember that I got the folders and file names up on the search results that time. I must have because I did all my music files in alphepetic order on the dvds and it must have shown the names for me to do that.
Anyway after the first crash I got the hard drive replaced through the manufactorers warrenty and they either fixed the old one or sent a refurbished replacement because a few months later and I have the same problem.
That brings me to where I am now with it all. I have just searched the drive for more than a month, I had to start the search 2 times because windows randomly restarted the first time and killed the first almost done search. Anyway I let it go for like 4 more weeks and it just finished last night.
My problem now is that all the files were found with no names and no folders, they all came up under lost files as the folder view and the only way to get some of the names is to highlight the files and check the window at the bottem beside the preview window.
Now I guess there is no way to get the names now right?
Also I think I am just going to save what I want to data dvd discs and lose the rest. The thing is I did one dvd and I dont think I did it right.
How do I put the files to a data disc so I can acess the files from the dvd on my computer later?
Also when I am done everything do you think its possable to just reformat the drive and start useing it again from scratch?
It comes up as corrupted and it seems quite a few recovered video files are corrupted. Also Im not sure where I read it now but it said 'not a valad MTF' somewhere, I think in the event log the first time or something.
Anyway it said the same thing the last time the drive crashed and it seems that just has to do with the partitions of the drive and not the drive itself.
If thats the case I should be able to reformat and start useing again right?
I ask because I dont know if I can get the drive replaced again although the replacement only lasted like 4 months the last time. If the warrenty is gone I may be stuck with it and if thats the way it is I would like to use it still.
Is there any point in doing a full format recovery after I get the files I want saved? I did a quick format recover and had no luck.
Thats all for now. Please get back to me when you can and thanks for your time.
