Okay...
I have configured Word to save the 'autosave' files in the same directory as the working file. I SAW these files there in Explorer -- all about 70 MB! Upon exiting Word, it deletes these files.
I corrupted the working file (and overwrote the backup before realizing it was corrupt). (Yes, it was backed up!)
RMP gets _amazing_ reviews, but I cannot figure out how to have it search for *.tmp files.

On a related note, other recovery software seem to completely miss the directory, entitled 'TRANSFER'
