Unhappy Error stuck on Scanning for Logical Drive G?

Updated in post 2, didn't know I could edit this post.

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505. I had to replace the hard drive and memory cards this week, which Dell sent to me as I was still under warranty. I have my old hard drive in an enclosure that hooks up via 2 USB ports. When I hooked it up to my daughter's netbook and ran the trial version, I was able to see some files, but it was incredibly slow due to the her system not being sufficient to handle it, as it's only intended for light use. Her system uses XP, and did not have this problem. However, I cannot run this recovery on that netbook.
When my old hard drive is not hooked up to the USB ports, I do not get this message "Scanning for Logical Drive G." Do you have any advice? I really need to try to retrieve my data files, spreadsheets, music, email, contacts, etc. Thank you.
