Hi,
i merged two partitions with partition magic and when it shifted all the data i got bad sequence number. i tried to merge a 8gb partition into some 170gb partition, now the 170gb partition shows as unformatted/raw. windows did an chkdsk on the 8gb partition and fixed stuff (or actually broke it dunno). i tried several recover tools but when i double click a mp3,movie,picture what not file the contents of that file is totally weird. like the contents of all files are mixed. what could that be and what should i try? thanks for any suggestions. cheers |

The location of each file on your drive is tracked by a Master File Table record (MFT).
There is an MFT table for each partition. It sounds like that when you merged the two partitions the MFT table on the second partition was destroyed and the MFT table on the first partiton has been changed so it thinks there is now one big drive - thus the records no longer point to the right location but point to positions where other files exist. Download and try Recover My Files from www.recovermyfiles.com. Run a "Complete Format Recover" on the RAW drive letter searching ONLY for the default selected file types. It may be that your MFT records are to screwed around to get good results. In this instance you should run a Complete File Search for specific file types (music and video take the longest so run a separate search for these). This method will find files by their header and footer so they will more likely be valid but because the file name is only stored in the MFT record the file names will not be recovered and the files will be called "Recovered....".
