Default Recovering AVI files

Hi there,

My hard drive recently got corrupted do to a weak power supply. I've been reading and lurking this forum a lot lately about recover the files and their original file names. I read that I'm suppose to do a COMPLETE FORMAT SEARCH and leave the default files types. Well I didn't leave the default files types as was and only checked AVI. Is this fine the way it is?

Hi,

If you have a problem hard disk like yours, the best sequence of events is as follows:

1. Make sure you are running the latest verison of Recover My Files - avaialble at www.recovermyfiles.com or if you already have the program installed, click the UPDATE button on the main program screen.

2. First try a "Fast Format Recover" - the main reason to try this first is because it is FAST - i.e. it should finish in less than 20 minutes and if it works it will get all your files back with full file and folder names.

3. IF the Fast Format Recover does not work, next try the "Complete Format Recover". In almost all cases you only need to search for the default selected file types (.doc, .xls, .ppt, .avi, .zip, .bmp, .jpeg, .pdf). These are common file types found on most systems - RMF finds them and uses them to recover the entire file and folder structure (including all file types with full file and folder structure).

In your specific case, if RMF has found more than 500 .avi files then it should have enough informaiton to rebuild the whole file structure. If it is still searching and you want to add in some more of the above file types, then whilst the search is in progress click on OPTIONS - FILE TYPES and add them in.

The important thing when you are running a Complete Format Recover is that the "Files Found" in the progress window gets up over 500. This will help it find all "OS items" (which are the actual files with full file and folder names).

I hope this helps. We are currently writing version 4 of Recover My Files which will take all this decision making about what type of search to run out of the picture.

I have like about 400 AVI files as I can remember. I only selected AVI and it's half way done, should I select the other ones as well right now?

Yes - add the other files now - as per my earlier instructions. I can't hurt.

It finished searching after 26 hours and it said it found over 500 files and over 1000 O/S files, but my file names and folders weren't recovered!

Is there anything else I can do???

I have the latest version which is version 3.98. I tried Fast Format Recover, but it didn't even find one single avi file. Then I did Complete Format Recover, but only selected AVI. Half way through, I selected the rest. Do you think I should do it again with those files types selected from the start?

Also, I downloaded something in the drive that I'm recovering and it might have tampered with it. I'm not too sure. I see all all of my AVI files, but no folder structure!

One more thing, when are you **** going to implement a save thing where we can just save the searched files? If you **** are planning on that, when will it be released?

Yes, you should run the Complete Format Recover with all of the default file types selected.

I dont know what you mean when you say "can just save the searched files?"

What I mean is an option where we don't have to save the searched files right away, but after. Normally, we would have to save it to the computer or we would have to scan again. So basically, we can save what we searched so we can save it to the computer next time.

It's now official. I tried everything and I cannot get the filenames back. I am now going to have to look through 500 files and rename it. =[
