I am attempting file recovery from a 330gb drive and RMF will run from 8 to 10 hours, showing hundreds of files found, but then shuts down without warning or message. It is probably only 10 to 15% through the scan when it shuts down. The "update software" option says I'm using most current version. I've tried using different settings and attempting different combinations of file types to no avail. What options do I have?

Hi,
It is very strange that it shuts down like that. It must be hitting a bad sector that causes an error we have not seen before. What happened to the drive? Exactly what type of search are you selecting? What file types are you selecting in the search?

The drive is a slave. The motherboard had to be replaced when the PC stopped booting up. The main drive was reformatted, as was this slave. No files have been written to the slave yet; I was using it to store files, not realizing that only an external drive was likely to be immune to a motherboard problem.
I've picked standard files to search for - jpeg, pst, pdf, bmp, doc. And I found this archived message. What "debug" version is there? __________________________________________ GDH Administrator Join Date: Feb 2005 Posts: 1,463 Format Recovery From an External USB drive Are you using the latest version, 3.56, available from www.recovermyfiles.com or by clicking the UPDATE button. If so, please try the same search but this time just search for .bmp and .avi files (turn the other default selected files off). Do you still get the problem? If so, we will need to send you a special debug version which isolates the problem on your PC. You need to send an email to support to get this. __________________ Graham Henley GetData Support Staff http://www.getdata.com http://www.recovermyfiles.com |

There is a debug version which will tell us exactly what the problem is. It would be good to get you to run this, but first we can try a few things to recover your files.
It is very likely that the problem is being caused by a specific file of a specifc type. Please do the following: Run RMF and click on Fast Format Recover. In the drive selection window, select the "physical drive" that is the same size as your problem drive. This search should take less than 30 minutes to run - it is worth a try as it may well recover all your data. At the end of the search look in Folder View of the results screen for your files. You should see all file and folder names here and be able to click on the files an preview their content. If a Fast Format Recover does not work, next run a "Complete Format Recover". Select only .bmp and .avi file types. Let this search run for 1 hour and tell me what the "File Found" and "OS Itmes Found" say in the progress bar. Thank you.
