Default Maxtor Firmware issue

I have a Maxtor Fireball 3 that is detected by BOIS but indicates drive error. All of the research I have done indicates it is a firmware issue. My question is;
If the firmware track on the platter is bad and not repairable is the data lost forever?

Default Data Recovery

When you use a program like Recover My Files (www.recovermyfiles.com) to examine the disk, can you see it as a "physical drive"? If so, what happens when you run a "Fast Format Recovery"?
