I use a USB ext drive without system files installed. All I do is run RMF from this drive there is no need for system files on the USB drive. (just make sure theoperating system of the main PC is able to detect USB ie Win 98 and above.

Yes - you can install on a USB drive. If you do not want to install it on the computer on which the files were lost, install it on another computer and just copy the contents of the C:Program Files\Recover My Files folder to a USB or a CD.
