Default File Name Issue (MFT??)

Hi,

I have been using Recover My Files to try and salvage some Word files I had stored on a Windows 2003 R2 Server which had been formatted. The recovery I believe has gone fine, but have issues with the file names.

So far I have chosen "Complete Format Recover"
When Recover My Files searches for drives it finds:
C: {no label} 32.00GB
D: New Volume 104.86 GB
0 Physical 136.90 GB

I have ticked the box for 0 Physical 136.90 GB

In the file type selection I have left the default select file types as they are, this contains the file type that I require (Word .doc). I am led to believe this will locate the "Master File Table" which will give file names to recovered files.

When the search is complete it has found (The numbers next to the file name is the quantity of files found and the total size of the selected file types):
BMP: 12241 2.84GB
EXCEL: 16427 8.60GB
JPEG: 23537 1.97GB
JPEG DIGITAL CAMERA: 21589 9.90GB
PDF: 9405 10.36GB
POWERPOINT: 3888 2.73GB
WAVE: 4588 1,006.5MB
WORD: 112513 107.21GB
ZIP: 5327 34.34GB

I have ticked on the box for "Word" and have saved these files to an external hard drive. This process took a long time because of the size of the number of files which needed to be copied to the external hard drive and because the server has no USB 2.0 Ports or fire wire ports.
Once it finished saving the words file to the hard drive (1 day almost!), it takes an eternity for me to even open the folder which contains the word files, once it has I am presented with 112513 word files all by the file name "Recovered_Word_XXXX" the XXXX indicate a number at the end of the file. When I have tried to open the folder it often crashes presumably due to the number of files it contains.

Is there any way I can run a search that will recover the word files with the original file names?

Or

Is there any way I can recover the word files in batches of say 1000, so I can run a search of words and characters contained in the word files?

Hi,

Please check "Folder View" of the results screen to see if you can see your original file and folder structure.

Here are some instructions on how to best run a "Complete Format Recover" using Recover My Files v3.98: http://forums.getdata.com/computer-d...ard-drive.html

(Please note that we will improve the search selection process when Recover My Files version 4 is released later this year).

When i look at folder view all i can see is:

Drive 0 then it is branched out to a folder called lost files which has a question mark next to it.

Should this part be different?

If you only see "lost files" in folder view it means that the MFT table was not located and the original file names cannot be recovered.

You only option is to work with the un-named files. Try and reduce the number of word files that you saved into the folder. Then you can use a renamer product like http://download.getdata.com/MassRenamer.exe to rename the files using the meta data they contain.

You may also find Explorer View, http://download.getdata.com/ExplorerView-Setup.exe useful, as you can preview the contents of Word files in Windows Explorer and rename them with the f2 key.

Smile Excellent product

I cannot tell you what a god send this product has been. i work in the tech sector so an quite conscious of backing up data. i use an external drive. and i was reformating my main PC's HD, but i forgot to disconnect the external drive, so i blindly went ahead executing commands, not realizing that i was working in the external hard drive. i seriously wanted to shoot myself when i realized what i had done. i felt for certain that the data on the external drive was lost forever. and i had a lot of sentimental files there--pictures of my niece since she was a baby--and awesome collection of electronic dance music--ZIP files of all my applications, my money files. i am so so so happy i was able to recover these. thank you so much, you really helped me in a tremendous way. i would have paid triple the amoint of what this software costs. it was a blessing. may good fortunre befall everyone who worked on this application
