It is hard to know what the person at the PC shop has done to your PC.
The best search for you to run is a Complete Format Recover on the physical drive. Search for the pre-selected file types only. Let the search run all the way over the disk (could take up to 12 hours so do it overnight) and at the end of the search look both in File Type View and Folder View of the search results screen for your files. Files that do not preview in the search results screen are likely to be corrupt and it is unlikely that they will be accessible once saved.

Put a tick in the box next to the ones that you can preview.
To select groups of files hold down the SHIFT key and hilight the files with your mouse, then press the SPACE bar to turn the selection ticks on (or off). You can also use the CTRL key for non-consequtive groups. Once you have selected the files to save, press the SAVE FILES button.

A partition is a drive letter on your computer, e.g. C:, that contains your files.
FAT or NTFS describes the way in which the partition is configured. FAT is the older partition structure, NTFS is the newer. If you type FAT and NTFS into wikepdia or similar sites you will find all the information you need. In the Recover My Files results screen, if you have found the partitions, then you should also be able to see the files that they contain.
