Is it Recover My Files that you are using?
Are you logged in as Administrator? (you need to be)

Yes to both. I'm an admin on this machine and I'm using Recover My Files. I do see files in C:\Program Files\GetData\Recover My Files and have a shortcut on my desktop. I checked the event viewer and no entries found. Is there some type of install log file to look at?

I am an existing user and have a similar problem. I tried two methods to update to the latest version of Recover My Files 3.9.8.6148. The first was to click on the Check for Updates button. The update downloaded and installed. It then asked for permission to restart to allow the new executable to load. This was granted. The re-load started then "Beep" and nothing.
Next I removed Recover My Files via Add/Remove Programs, downloaded the full download from the GetData web site and installed again from scratch. Same result. Beep and then nothing. It fails to load. Next I again removed the program via add/ remove programs, cleaned out the temp files and did some registry cleaning. Re-installed the program and ... "Beep" and nothing. This time I removed the program using add/remove programs and went back to an older version of the Recover My Files setup file that I had archived. It installed itself and works perfectly. Is there a problem with the newest installer perhaps. I too am using XP at SP3, with administrative permissions. Never had a problem like this before. ![]() |

This is a strange problem! Could you please click on the Live Support button in the top right hand corner of this page so that I can have a quick chat with you. Thank you.

Hi,
Thanks for the feedback. The problem of the "beep" relates to security permissions - it seems that after the update it was affecting about 10% of our users. If you have this problem, this new version will fix it: http://download.getdata.com/RecoverMyFiles-Setup.exe and shortly we will release another new update with the fix included. Thank you.

I installed 3.9.8.6220 today and get the results described above. The older versions I found (one older than the one you mention and one newer than the one you mentioned) do the same thing.
For me, I'm not sure if it's beeping because the machine I'm attempting this with is remote to me. I configured DEP and have full-local administrator rights. I even tried it as the local administrator. What happens for me more specifically is this: Installation goes fine... I double-click the Icon After a delay (varies depending on OS), all I get is the icon in the task bar and the only options are to close or minimize. If I try to close, nothing happens and I have to kill the process. In Win 2000, it takes a few seconds before it happens and, when I try to kill the application, it errors saying that it's in debug mode. I end up having to kill the process directly from the task list. In Win 2003 and XP, it opens to the task bar immediately but exhibits the same behavior. But I CAN kill the application. I'm convinced it's either a security issue or, in a longshot, the hardware (it works on my desktop PC- a Dell but does not on the "target" machine which is an HP). What were the security issues involved in the other case? thanks |

Is possible that you are not using the true administrator account when logged into these machines? This is usually the cause of such problems, as Recover My Files, because of what it does, needs low level sector access to the drive.
