Personal Folder Access
I had a COMPAQ Presario running windows 98. The disk crashed and was unable to boot.
I have recovered my personal file folder to an external hard drive, but am unable to access the files or sub-folders. "x is not available" Access Denied. Is there any way to access the information in the old folders?

Did you have password protection or encryption turned on?
If you are currently logged in as administrator, are you able to right click and use the PROPERTIES > SECURITY tab to take ownership of this recovered folder?

Data Recovery
Are you able to copy the files to your C: drive and try?
If you type "take ownership of folder windows XP" you will find a whole bunch of suggestions on this topic.
