recently i had a virus sort of a thing infecting my pc. i lost my media files(.avi), but i read online about the same virus and people had used recovermyfiles to get their data back. so i downloaded recovermyfiles from the getdata website. the first time i used it the quick scan showed all the files on the partition of my hd which i had lost. but the next time i used it the event log had this written in it, and it showed nothing.

Hi,
Try running a "Complete Format Recover" and in the drive selection window, select and search the 'physical' drive (you should be able to identify it by the displayed size). In the file type selection window, use only the pre-selected file types. Run this search, and let me know what the progress window says after 30 minutes. Thank you.

It sounds like the drive may not be being read properly, or have bad sectors.
In the OPTIONS > ADVANCED, select 'prompt for start cluster' and then when prompted, start the search about one third of the way down the disk. Please let me know what happens. Thank you.
