DVD RW lost files

Hello,
Yesterday morning I decided to "back up" my files on a DVD R-W. In the meantime while it was copying and pasting over (though I suspect I had actually CUT my files instead)-- the computer went idle as I was away and the screen went black. Because of this, the files did not transfer over to the disk correctly. My computer froze up and I had to shut if off via the power button.

When I turned it back on, it showed there was an error transferring the files, and I noticed a good portion of them were gone... lost in space! Not on the DVD-RW nor on my hard drive where I was getting them from.

I immediately began running free recovery programs to "undelete" my files, but it didn't get everything. Next, I did a system restore for two days previous and was still not able to recover everything I need. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can recover these files?

I would be infinitely grateful.
