Recover my files apps Freezing

I am using this software to recovery files from our President's external drive which he accidentally formatted. Software version is 4.0.0 (390). It begins fine, but then just freezes and stops responding. It freezes during the scanning blocks for lost files. I have tried on two computers and same results. Any ideas how to successfully make this work to recover the files? Thanks

It is hard to say exactly why it is freezing.
