Updated in post 2, didn't know I could edit this post.
I have a Dell Inspiron E1505. I had to replace the hard drive and memory cards this week, which Dell sent to me as I was still under warranty. I have my old hard drive in an enclosure that hooks up via 2 USB ports. When I hooked it up to my daughter's netbook and ran the trial version, I was able to see some files, but it was incredibly slow due to the her system not being sufficient to handle it, as it's only intended for light use. Her system uses XP, and did not have this problem. However, I cannot run this recovery on that netbook. When my old hard drive is not hooked up to the USB ports, I do not get this message "Scanning for Logical Drive G." Do you have any advice? I really need to try to retrieve my data files, spreadsheets, music, email, contacts, etc. Thank you. Last edited by blessedbeingmom; 10-31-2009 at 07:23 PM. |

After trying multiple times and having my laptop (Vista) continue to get hung up and not recognize this drive at all (not even through my computer) and continuing to get hung up on "scanning for logical drive G," I went back to hooking the drive up via USB to my daughter's netbook (Dell Mini 10, running XP), and it works, but it is VERY slow. It finally made it through the partitions and found the one I need, and I selected the drive and automatic drive recovery. However, I already used my activation code for the software on my laptop (even though I couldn't get it to work on my laptop). Also, I am afraid it will take years at this rate to finish scanning. I am now up to about 6,700 blocks out of only about 209 million blocks.
![]() I learned my lesson about backing up things, that is for sure. Now I need to figure out a good backup external hard drive to invest in, well, hopefully once I have something saved to back up. It's not looking very promising at the moment. |

Hi,
Just write to support@getdata.com and ask for another activation to be added to your key. We have not problems with doing this for a legitimate situation. It seems very odd that you can read the USB device on one PC but not another. Is it possible that the USB case is old and only supports USB 1 and not USB2? In your current search, how many 'Filesystem Records' have been found? Please read these instructions (especially the part in green) and you will see why I ask: Recover a Formatted Drive with Recover My Files v4

As of this morning, it shows:
Files Found: 4591 Filesystem Records: 96905 Scanning block 26,030,474 of 209,160,192. What happens if I stop it and it ends up not being all found? Will I have to start scanning all over again at the beginning? FWIW I am using this enclosure which I just bought and it is USB 2.0. I am not too concerned with pictures as we did a recent backup of those and haven't added any more since the backup. Thank goodness! I am most concerned with my Itunes music files, word documents and Excel files. ETA It is still going up as of 11:13 a.m. Sunday (central time), a couple of hours after I wrote this post. It is now up to: Files Found: 6852 Filesystem Records: 124319 Scanning block 44,090,000 (approximately) of 209,160,192. Last edited by blessedbeingmom; 11-01-2009 at 09:15 AM. |

Hi,
Note down the block that you are up to. If you want to start the search again from this spot, click on OPTIONS > ADVANCED > and put a tick in the box for 'prompt for start sector'. Yes, stop the search and it will rebuild and display the file and folder structure. The Filesystem Records: 124319 is the important number. You could have stopped the search as soon as it reached it. Each file system number is a file with its full name and folder structure.

I was actually able to get it to work on my laptop (which was a lot faster) by unplugging it when it got stuck on "scanning for logical drive G" and then selecting that hard drive and then plugging the external drive back in. I am still going through all that I have recovered, but I am pleased to have recovered most of my XLXS files that I worked so hard to create. Thank you so much for all your help!
P.S. I don't have it up anymore to know what it was, but my filesystem records number actually went up much higher than that 124319 by the time it was all over with. |
