Unhappy recovering on unbootable hard drive

I have windows vista that has died. I want to recover my word and picture files using Recover My Files (which I have successfully used on Sandisk drives) but can't get the computer rebooted to do so. Does anyone know how to load the system enough to look at the drive?
thanks

Default data recovery

Are you able to try connecting the drive to another computer as a secondary drive? e.g. via usb case?

Default unbootable hard drive

I haven't tried that. I'm not familiar with a USB case. Can you explain?
Thanks

Default Data Recovery

Its an external box that you put your hard drive in and then you plug it into your PC using a USB cable.

If you put 'external usb case' into google you will find lost of examples.

They are very cheap to buy when you purchase one without the drive included (i.e. so that you can put your problem drive in it).
